Report
On what was a grey overcast miserable day, The highly disorganised Nick Clarke lost the toss and Winterbourne were asked to field.
With player punctuality at an all-time low Winterbourne took to the field with 9 players. Ian much to his disgust took the first over
Against the wind and bowled reasonably well, conceding 7 runs in the first over. With the absence of Dobbell through injury, Nathan opened
at the other end. He was a little wayward and conceded 13 off his first over. Things didn't get much better as Ian next over went for 12 and Nathan’s 11.
The pitch was wide and old tired legs found it hard to restrict the crazy running of McMurrey who was turning 1s into 3s with his gangly legs.
A change of bowling was introduced to try and slow down the alarmingly high run rate. Phil was introduced and bowled well having a couple of chances put down.
Unfortunately he still went for 9 an over of his 5 over spell. The bowling hero of the day was part-time, soon to become full-time bowler Alan Fisher. Alan bowled superbly
picked up a wicket but more importantly conceded only 16 runs from his 3 overs. Trequnna was finally out when Ian returned for his second spell, but the damage was done, having smashed 87.
With both openers out the run rate had slowed and Wanborough finished on a solid 140 for 3 from there 15 over allocation.
So putting a terrible bowling, fielding and captaining display behind us, Winterbourne were still in with a chance. Nick and James strode to the crease with a required rate of just over 9 per over.
Things started well as the first over yielded 15 runs. (great start) Unfortunately the second over was not so good James was bowled and 4 runs were made. 19 for 1.
This brought Pete Martin to the crease and he a Nick kept the scoring going along nicely until Nick received some of his own medicine, Running himself out to for 20. 37 for 2. Next in was Andy Dodson, This partnership did
not last long as Pete was top edged a ball the deserved to be put in the next field and was caught by the keeper for 10. 45 for 3. Next in was the infamous Alan fisher, With both our Flintoffs at the crease this should be over shortly.
Unfortunately this was not the case as Alan departed without troubling the scores. 45 for 4 off 4. Next in was Nathan unfortunately this partnership did not last long either as another batsman succumbed to a ball that should have been hit into
the next county. 58 for 5. Although the wickets were falling the run rate was still healthy and Winterbourne were on course. Next in was the Veteran Des Clarke, a match winner in his day but now way past that, or was he? He and Nathan looked good
and were scoring runs above the required rate, until disaster struck as the Clarke run out phenomena continued with Nathan left high and dry after a suicidal run called by Des. 73 for 6 off 8. Next in was Geoff Catling who's recent form did
not make for pleasant reading. But with Des scoring freely at one end and Geoffs support they moved the score onto 105 before Geoff was again victim to the Clarke suicidal run out. Well done Geoff you doubled you runs for the season and quadrupled your highest
score, departing for 5. :-), Next in was the highly talented (at what we are yet to find out) Tom Shaw. They continued to keep the score ticking over before Tom was
Caught & Bowled also for 5. 117 for 8 off 13. This left Winterbourne needing 24 off 16 balls, with Des and Ian at the Crease. Ian attitude in the field had left a lot to be desired and he was seen sulking on the boundary on more than one occasion. However was he man enough
to stand up to the challenge laid before him? Apparently so as a mixture of Wides, 4s, 3s, 2s, and 1s, by both Des and Ian left the very simplest of equations. 1 from 1 with Des on strike. As if in slow motion the ball was bowled, Des came forward, then went back, playing a late cut
with his wrists past the diving gullies and point fielder for 4. to win Winterbourne an emphatic victory and great team performance. The perfect game of two halves.
Great performance lads, We kept our heads up even after an awful fielding display and showed we can chase any target. Well done to Ian and Des who won us the game at the end, although IM sure Phil could have done the same, isn’t that right Phil :-)
