Report
It was a lovely hot day as Winterbourne travelled to Purton to play their game against Stratton, Having won the toss the
skipper chose to field. With only 3 main bowlers. Winterbourne had to keep it tight on what looked to be a quick playing surface.
Things started off well with the veteran bowling attack of Dobbell and Sharpe keeping the visitors to 15 off the first 3 overs before
Ian finally got the first wicket, bowling the batsman with one of his wicked Boomers. Another couple of tight overs saw the visitors
on 35 off 7. However the two danger men were just getting set. Nathan came of to replace Pete, and the batsman started to take advantage
of the good track. A few 6s and 4s were hit and Strattons run rate jumped. The game was in the balance and Winterbourne desperately needed a
wicket. Ajay having made 50 freed his arms even more and put a ball high in the air on the off side, where Nick made good ground and
took what was not an easy catch. This wicket at least stopped the sixes although runs still seemed to flow. A 3rd wicket again slowed Stratton
but they finished with a healthy 143 for 3.
So with a very competitive score on the board both openers Nick and James strode to the crease. James hit form instantly and
was scoring boundaries freely while Nick scored at a run a ball to give James the strike and they set a solid platform at 28 off 2.
This became 39 off 3. Half way threw the 4th over James aggressive nature was his downfall as he got a top edge which skied back to the bowler and he was out having
made 35 off 45 run total. Next in was Pete Martin who started off in trouble against Ajay who only went for 4 including a two noball off his first over. However at
the other end runs were coming freely and Nick was starting to find form. At 67 off 7 this was a very important part of the game and 14 off the 8th over made things a little
more comfortable again. 82 off 8, 92 off 9, 101 off 10. Things were looking rosy until a typical Nick Clarke dismisal saw Pete Martin unluckily run out for 36. Nick was kicking himself
and did so even more as Nathan fell LBW first ball. 118 off 12, 25 required from 24 balls. Crisis, Panic as Alan fisher strode to the crease. Ajay who had been causing most of the batsman
problems started the 13th in the best possible way, three dot balls and the pressure was mounting on Alan. However a couple of 2s saw fisher move the score on before
Nick was Caught, trying to score big on the leg side. So Winterbourne were 123 off 13 requiring 21 from the last 16. Fish and Pete Mathews both took up the challenge and smashed
the bowler to all parts and with hard running scored 16 off the over. 139 from 14, 5 to win off 8.
First ball of Ajays over saw fisher charge him and was duley stumped. Wayne hearne to the crease, whos first ball was a dot and the nurves started to twitch. 5 from 7. Things could have gone against us as
Wayne was dropped with an easy change at Mid off but they ran 1 anyway. Pete then hit 2 off the next ball to ease the pressure. 2 from 5. Wayne Hit the winning 2 runs and Winterbourne celebrated a great victory.
Well done Boys :-) great result.
